Hello. I think the foremost problem is the media. The problem posed sounds like the textbook problems created by cheap media. But yes, the age of the DVD player is also important. Obviously, the older DVD players will not know what the hell + or - R's are. This is why it's important to get +R's to write them as Rom. Even if you do that however, extremely old players will still not know what a DVD+R written as Rom is.
